Holiday Tips and Tricks for Weight Management

Are you one of the 90% of all Americans that put weight on during the holidays? If so, then you really want to listen up. I'll give you a couple of quick hints and tips to make it through this holiday season without putting on extra weight.

1 - When you attend all those parties, you know the food is good. It often includes danishes, cookies and tons of finger food. The good thing is most are now including vegetable and fruit trays, too. I'm not going to tell you to stick with just the veggies and fruits. I know it doesn't work, and that's okay.
Be choosy when you had the opportunity to eat the cookies and cakes. Make the choice. If you're like me, you can choose only homemade goodies. I'm going one step further and not eating anything with extra sugar on it. Another variation is you can only choose to eat things that are red or green. Just make a choice, and stick with it.

2 - No matter what dinner you go to, fill half your plate with vegetables first. Then fill the next quarter with protein and then have whatever you want for the remaining quarter. Filling your plate half with vegetables allows you to get exactly what you need into your diet. It also ensures you choose the healthiest foods to make up half a more of your diet.
Do you think this might not work for Christmas dinner? It's actually really easy. Most households have things like candied sweet potatoes, carrots or green bean casserole as typical holiday fare. As you can see, a spoonful of each of these would constitute about half of your dinner plate.

3 - Maybe you're one of those people that are constantly tempted by the candies and cookies that come into your office. Here's another good place to be picky. You could only choose the foods that are homemade and that you know don't contain harmful preservatives or additional chemicals. It's not deprivation to choose healthy foods. You're only denying things that are going to hurt you.

If this still doesn't work, remember exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight. If you start now, you'll have a leg up on everyone else that's going to dive in at the New Year. You'll be more likely to stick it out when you start now. That way, after a month or so, when you're losing your momentum, you'll have the energies of so many other people rushing in and it will give you a second wind.

To wrap up, be choosy with what you're going to eat this year. Whether you're partying or exposed to cookies at the office, choose healthy foods and be very picky about the types of goodies you going to eat. At dinner, so happy your plate with vegetables first.
