I lived with bulimia for 20 years and finally overcame my eating disorder in 2005. These bulimia tips are meant to help you overcome your binge eating disorder. No two roads to recovery are exactly the same. There is no one way to overcome bulimia. So try a few things and see what works best for you.
  1. Talk about it - A secret can be a burden and when you share it with even one person it can be a great relief. And quite simply when you speak of a situation or a problem with someone else, it helps to clarify a lot of things in your own mind.

  2. Don't have trigger foods around - This is one of the practical bulimia tips. If your trigger foods aren't around, you're less likely to be triggered to binge. To help with this, only go food shopping when you're not stressed, depressed or upset.

  3. Forgive yourself - For goodness sake if there's one thing you need to come to terms with, it's that you're a good person. You may have a lot you feel guilty about or that you don't think you did right. Don't beat yourself up about it. Forgive yourself and move on.

  4. Relieve the stress - Stress is a known trigger for binging and purging. Because food is what you turn to when you're stressed (or sad or hurt), find other ways to relieve the stress. Look back on the things that make you feel good. Find new ways to relax. Take the time to do fun things, things that you enjoy to help keep stress levels down.

  5. Identify your triggers - Are some people, situations or events triggering compulsive eating for you? Identifying these triggers and then either avoiding them or developing effective coping mechanisms to deal with them is one of the valuable bulimia tips I've learned.

  6. Eat a balanced breakfast -This keeps your blood sugar steady and makes it less likely for you to feel the craving for certain foods later in the day. Breakfast sets the tone for your metabolism and nutrients for the day. Start the day off on the right foot.

  7. Get outside - I know from personal experience that being alone and indoors leaves you vulnerable to binging and purging. Whether you go for a walk, shopping with friends or just sit in your garden and watch the grass grow - being outside and with people can help take your mind off of your problems or feelings of loneliness.

  8. Journaling - You can use pen and paper, your computer or even create a private blog to write about your feelings. Getting out your thoughts gives you clarity and helps you heal tremendously.   9. Consider nutritional supplements - Bulimia treatments can take time and you may not be able to stop your harmful eating habits overnight. Whether you are in the midst of bulimia or starting your road to recovery, consider nutritional supplements to correct any nutritional deficiencies you may have. You can't think clearly when your brain is not getting the nutrients it needs.

  10. Read self-help books - You may be surprised at how much they can help. Recovered bulimics, like me, share their wisdom and experience and can help you with personal growth and your recovery process.

  11. Find a support group - The one-on-one interaction can help motivate and inspire your own recovery and you may find people's bulimia stories give you new ideas and a different perspective.

  12. Seek out bulimia treatments - Rather than one of the bulimia tips this is an exhortation to try and start your process of recovery. Therapy can help you by bringing about closure for deep-seated emotional issues that you may not have confronted and will help change behaviors that are harmful to you.

  13. Practice self-love - I put this tip on the bottom because I know it's the last one you'll see and will be most likely to remember. Learning to love yourself is THE most important element of a successful bulimia recovery. You've probably heard it before, but you need to start valuing yourself for who you are rather than what you look like on the outside.
